Meditation 101

For us to become healthier we need to listen to our bodies. And what better way to do that than by learning to quiet our busy minds? Meditation can be intimidating for a beginner, but it does not need to be. All you need is a quiet place to sit, a few minutes of your time (and really, five minutes will do you wonders), and a peaceful cd with soothing music and sounds. And the reward for this investment in yourself? The benefits of mediation are too many to count:
Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients. Leads to a deeper level of relaxation. Reduces anxiety attacks. Decreases muscle tension and headaches. Builds self-confidence. Enhances the immune system. Reduces activity of viruses and emotional distress.’

summer centerpieces

Outdoors or in your own dining room, summer dinners can be a festive affair with some happy flowers and bright colored napkins. We looked at Martha's always reliable sense of aesthetics for some visual inspiration. Check out your local farmer's market for the most beautiful flowers, and be creative when fixing and matching place mats and napkins – the more colorful, the best…. and happy dinning in the sunshine!

carried away

while Sex and the City 2 did not received very good reviews; we decided to honor the fashion in the movie. Even though the price tags of the clothes are so high, and only the rich and famous can afford to buy them – it is always nice to remember the immortal Coco Chanel: "fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

Applelicious

Summer is here! And it did take up to now for things to warm up in Seattle. Nothing says summer time as the American Classic apple pie. There are as many apple pie recipes as there are types of apples, and our all time favorite is:

Uncovered Apple Pie

One pack ready-made puff pastry
2–3 Granny Smiths, peeled
2 tablespoons caster sugar (caster sugar is pricy, but oh, what sweetness!)
1 tablespoon melted butter
lemon juice

Preheat oven to 220°C.
Roll out pastry and score a 1.5cm border all round.
Refrigerate pastry for 10 minutes
Sprinkle 1 tbsp of sugar on the pastry. Try not to get them on the 1.5cm border.
Pat the apple slices dry and arrange in pretty rows on the pastry.
Brush with melted butter.
Sprinkle with remaining sugar.
Bake for 20 – 25 minutes

If you like your dessert a little sweet, at a little more of the caster sugar, or drizzled a little honey. Serve it warm with French Vanilla Ice Cream. Enjoy!

summer light

for the first weekend of summer, nothing better to begin our Saturday posts series than a darling outdoor wedding. this is an oldie but unforgettable one. held in our home state of WA, in the magic Bainbridge Island, the ceremony was featured in full summer light, having country coming together with romance. as a main guest, an antique gramophone... it simply doesn't get any cuter than that.
enjoy, and have a sun + fun + summer filled Saturday :)

Kimberly Baker is a local designer that is having a great national presence. her pieces are provocatively ethereal, and have adorned the likes of Scarlet Johansen and Lucy Liu. I love that I can choose the same piece in both silver and gold tones. check out Kimberly’s website and fall in love with her treasures.
